In medicine, adherence describes “The extent to which the patient continues the agreed-upon mode of treatment under limited supervision when faced with conflicting demands, as distinguished from compliance or maintenance.”1
Adherence is multifactorial, and both patients and health-care providers affect compliance as well as many external factors, but there are certain factors that complicate matters more such as complexity of medical regimens, poor understanding of treatment benefits, the occurrence of rare and unwanted side effects, and sometimes poor communication or even lack of trust between the patient and their health-care provider.
